Poker hand combinations

A cell on the grid is a hand type, not one exact pair of cards. AA is any two aces. There are six ways to pick two aces from four. AKs is any of the four suits, so four combinations. AKo is the other twelve ways to hold ace-king.

The arithmetic

A pair is C(4,2) = 6. A suited hand is 4. An offsuit hand is 12. Thirteen pairs, seventy-eight suited hands and seventy-eight offsuit hands give 13×6 + 78×4 + 78×12 = 1,326 combinations. That is every way to be dealt two cards from a 52-card deck.

What the percent means

The percents on Open Preflop are combination shares, not a count of blue cells. UTG opens about 14.2% of the 1,326 combinations. The button opens about 44.8%. AA alone is 6/1,326, under half of one percent, even though it is a single cell.

That is why AKo pulls more weight than AKs when you add up a range. Twelve combinations against four. Folding AKo from early position removes more of the deck than folding a suited connector.
